With more people utilising streaming platforms, the days of watching terrestrial television may be a thing of the past. In fact, streaming statistics from 2022 revealed that 9 in 10 Britons used streaming services, with 62% using Netflix and 48% watching via Amazon Prime.
In addition to these giant streaming platforms, there has also been a rise in the use of sports streaming services such as Sports RP and DAZN. But why is this? And what do these services offer that the likes of the BBC cannot?
Here we explore the rise of sports streaming platforms.
Access from a range of devices
Broadcasting services have widened their scope in recent years, launching apps and on-demand platforms in addition to their terrestrial offerings. However, while some services have gained exclusive rights to show international matches and sports events, it seems they are struggling to keep up with sports streaming services.
One of the biggest reasons for this is accessibility; unlike cable and broadcast, many of the most popular sports streaming services are designed to be watched anywhere, anytime and from any device.
Rolling contracts and one-off purchases
Terrestrial and cable services have adapted their offerings in recent years but many still require users to sign lengthy contracts and install additional equipment.
Streaming services, on the other hand, tend to offer a more flexible approach that puts users in control of their viewing experience. This includes rolling monthly contracts that are easy to amend and cancel, as well as one-off payments that provide access to live matches and sporting events without any upfront commitments.
Exclusive streaming and rights
Although broadcast technology can deliver live events to huge audiences, these services typically feature the biggest events in the sporting calendar. Traditional platforms cater to the masses which means they are ideal for catching the latest football match or keeping track of rugby scores.
However, sports streaming services offer access to a larger range of matches, fights and races. This includes sports such as MMA, wrestling, NFL, cricket and golf, and many platforms have exclusive rights to major and niche events.
Superior viewing experiences
For sports fans, there are few experiences that can compare to watching a thrilling match and cheering on their team to victory. In the case of traditional terrestrial services, sports are typically broadcast in HD and filmed from an angle that provides an overview of the entire event. However, sports streaming services tend to offer a more unique viewing experience with multiple camera angles that take viewers closer to the action.
