Samsung introduced the new Gear 2 and Gear Neo at MWC in Barcelona just a year after it first introduced its Galaxy Gear smartwatch back in 2013. A new report from Yonhap with data from Strategy Analytics claim that from the in total 700.000 sold smartwatches in Q1 2014 over 500.000 were from Samsung.
With more then 71% market share Samsung has seen a huge increase in sales compared to last year where it only had 52% and in total just 1.9 million smartwatches were sold in 2013, in 2014 there will be a huge increase in sales but i don’t think it will be enough to meet the 45 million goal which is what Analysts claimed last year.
The increase in sales has mainly been because of the cheaper Galaxy Neo, the Galaxy Note 3 & Gear 2 bundle and marketing. Two other big brands that are currently number 2 and 3 as far as market share go are Pebble and Sony. Pebble has also been working hard on improving its line of smartwatches recently introducing the new Steel Pebble to be able to match the high quality design of Smartwatches from companies like Samsung and Sony.
Over the next couple of months these numbers are only expected to rise as Google recently introduced its new operation system for wearables called Android Wear but just as Google is preparing it self to enter the wearables market so is technology giant Apple with the iWatch. It looks like 2014 will really be the year of the Smartwatch.
