Cyanogen Inc has been in the news lately as many big tech companies (like Google) are interested in acquiring the firm that is behind CyanogenMod, the most popular custom ROM for Android. This and the fact that Google is launching Android L soon makes Cyanogenmod 12 even more interesting for ROM enthusiasts.
Cyanogenmod 12 based on Android L
The Cyanogen team has previously confirmed that CM12 will in fact be based on Android L, Google’s new version of Android which features many big changes over its predecessor like support for 64-bit processors, material design etc. Currently Android L is only available as a developer preview allowing developers to optimize their app for the OS before its actual release which is expected to be very soon
Cyanogenmod 12 Release Date “The L is for Later”
One thing we all want to know is When will i be able o install CM12 on my device? In previous interviews the cyanogen team has said that all though Google has made a developer preview available it currently can’t start developing the new cyanogenmod version, as many of the code will change. The developer preview is great for making your app compatible with the OS but not to create a custom ROM.
“We could spend the next three weeks working on integrating CM features against this new platform, and then have it suddenly change dramatically and break in the final release of ‘L’. This would boil down to a waste of time”
CyanogenMod 12S for the OnePlus One
We will most likely see CyanogenMod 12S be released before CM12. For those who don’t know, the S version of CM is the custom ROM used on the OnePlus One a smartphone that comes with Cyanogenmod by default. According to Mike a staff member at OnePlus the One will get Android L within three months of release, which means that the upcoming CM 12S version will have to be ready by then.
