Google has recently released a new Android 5.0 Lollipop developer preview and developers have been working hard on getting the new apps and beta to unsupported devices. One of these apps is the Android 5.0 Lollipop Messenger app which is the new default home for all your SMS and MMS messages. The APK’s were posted by Mathew Baer and user Marlon Jones discovered that when installing the Messenger app on Android Kit Kat 4.4, it worked perfectly (later, more users on Reddit confirmed it worked too).

- First, we will need to download the .apk you can download it here
- Once downloaded, open up the .apk file
- Let it install
- Once installed, fire up the new app and message away!
For those wondering where the Hangouts app is, it is currently not included in the new Messaging app. As mentioned previously, the app is used exclusively for SMS and MMS ” Messenger will be specially designed to be a quick and easy way to send and receive SMS and MMS messages on Android; more to come”.
