A report from the Wallstreet journal claims that the upcoming Set top box from Amazon will feature a similar design to Google’s own media streaming device the Google Chromecast. First rumors of Amazon working on a set top box appeared last month as a way to encourage users to use Amazon’s services like Instant Video and possibly a new music streaming service.
The device will run a modified version of Android (similar to how the Kindle Fire tablets have a heavily modified Android version) and will feature third party apps like Netflix, Hulu and other popular video and music streaming services already available on the Apple TV and Roku TV
The Amazon device will carry a variety of apps available on Roku Inc. and Apple set-top boxes and run on a version of Google’s Android software, like Amazon’s tablet computers, these people said. Roku’s most popular apps include video services Netflix and Hulu Plus and music service Pandora, as well as Amazon’s own video-streaming service.
This isn’t the first time we hear rumors of a Dongle like format for the set-top box but as previously sources had already informed Techcrunch of the design. As of now there is no official release date but according to the latest rumors the device will become available some time during April this year.
