Twitter is planning on updating its messaging app in the future and the first phase of this big overhaul has already started. As of today you can now send direct Messages to anyone while previously it was required for you to follow them and vice versa, this feature was first tested with the @EventParrot twitter experiment. So what else is twitter going to do in order to update its messaging feature? 3 Sources “familiar with the matter” have told AllThingsD that Twitter is working on a standalone Instant Messaging app similar to iMessage, WhatsApp, WeChat, Blackberry Mesenger and Line. Many different social networks have already made improvements to their messaging features, specially Facebook due to the growth of IM apps and now Twitter is going to do so too, it already met with people from popular messaging app MessageMe.
We don’t know yet if the messages will be limited to 140 characters, however AllThingsD things we should see a official announcement from Twitter “before the year ends”. Make sure to follow AmongTech on Twitter!
